Beyond the Calculator at Urban OutfittersApril 05, 2017
GTM congratulates Kirsten Comely, Urban Outfitter’s Chief Tax Officer (CTO) and shares her passion for automating and advancing tax functions to better serve the overall business. Read her story in this Profile Magazine article.
Kirsten Comely started as a generalist tax manager at URBN, the umbrella company for the Urban Outfitters, Anthropology, Free People, BHLDN, Terrain, and Vetri Family Brands in the year 2000. At the time, URBN didn’t have a tax department, but had a vision to build one. Comely recognized the need for the right team to work and grow with an exciting company, and by 2010 had a team of five. In 2015, she was promoted to CTO.
Faced with added complexities such as technology, mobility and regulations from the IRS and foreign jurisdictions, Comely hired experts in subject matters such as transfer pricing, state and local tax, and accounting for income taxes in financial statements. She recognized that finding the best answer requires the tools necessary to do so — whether it is access to people within the business, or technical development opportunities outside the company.
