GTM Director Nikki McKinney, who leads the firm’s energy and utility practice, recently attended the 2025 PowerPlan Elevate Conference in Atlanta. PowerPlan is a leading provider of financial software and solutions for the energy industry and its annual conference provides attendees the opportunity to learn about PowerPlan’s latest technology and connect with other organizations in the utility sector.
Here are three takeaways Nikki found most valuable from this year’s Elevate Conference:
The importance of networking
Attending Elevate reinforces the importance of meeting and speaking directly with clients and colleagues in the utilities space. I learned so much about the latest tax and technology challenges adding strain to client operations, such as making sure Tax has a seat at the table for ERP implementations. Not only did this conference give me a better understanding of how utility companies are using PowerPlan for their tax needs, but I also gained new insight into the gaps in their tax technology – and how GTM can better serve the needs of clients.
The benefits of generational diversity
Keynote speaker Jason Dorsey led a thought-provoking session focused on the importance of generational diversity within the workforce. The tax sector is changing rapidly, which can place added pressure on colleagues from different generations with often different work habits. As Jason pointed out, each generation can bring valuable insights and wisdom to the workforce — so long as we do our best to listen and learn from each other. It is important to remember that our coworkers are some of our best resources.
Maximizing PowerPlan for our clients
As a sponsor of the conference, GTM had a booth located next to the PowerPlan solution table, which attendees could visit to learn how PowerPlan technology can help solve their unique tax challenges. I got an in-depth understanding of how PowerPlan can support utility companies and now feel even better equipped to leverage this technology for our clients.
Join us for a webinar with PowerPlan on April 30th
On the heels of Elevate, GTM will be co-hosting a webinar with PowerPlan on April 30th focused on how to prepare for ASU 2023-09, which introduces a number of key updates to income tax disclosures.
